Question 1966 Engine and Transmission Identification

How would a person identify that they have an engine and transmission from a GT? I bought a car that came with an extra engine and tranny, and am wondering what the percieved value would be. I have someone who just wants the top loader tranny and not the engine. He is willing to pay me $700. Would I be wise to separate these? If it is an engine from the GT I would think it would be worth more with its tranny. Am I correct and does anyone here have any insight on this? I really need the money and I am leaning toward just parting with the tranny! Please advise.

Thanks

Hello , I am not that smart on these cost of newer motors compaired to price of the older but I can advise you in a direction as to where you can learn until someone smarter can help ya . If I am unsure of things I have for sell , I goto ebay and find as many as I can on the same item just like what I have . I look at the price offered and the end selling price . I try to make a judge accordingly . Is a start till you can learn better . Hope ya luck .

Well I was told that it might be a 289 four speed from a '66 GT. I tried Ebay and only found a toploader transmission from a Bronco.

Awww , am sorry I read the year on the motor you have , a 66 . Tell ya what . If you can write down as many numbers as you can that is on your motor and the tag number on the tranny I can tell you what each came out of year and then I can help you better on what they may sell for accordingly to what shape they are in . That price for the tranny sounds fair if all gears inside look ok . A top loader these days are exspensive . There is a good demand on mustang trannys . Find those numbers and post them . Also post the numbers on the heads . Loacated between the spark plugs . Example on cobrajet heads the number will show as c8-6090...That is a 68 year , 6090 heads are a good set . Yours is small block , post numbers , donot forget the tranny tag .

If you can take the pan off the motor and look at the main caps I can tell you how to tell if it is a hipo 289 or just a 289 . Hipo 289s came in k code cars , mustangs 63,64 fairlane k code cars . Ya may have a good hipo motor and tranny . If so I get 1300 bucks for a hipo tranny out of a mustang . You can these days at swap meets get a fair price , but as always gota have a buyer . If he offered ya 700 then either he needs it , knows the tag number and already knows what it is . Tell him you will call him back . Give me the tag number and I can tell ya 100 percent what you have .

Hello. There was no difference between the motor in a car that came with the GT package and the motor in a non-GT. In 66, the GT package was only available on an 'A' code or a 'K' code car, and the 'A' code or 'K' code motor in the GT cars was identical in every respect to the 'A' code or 'K' code motor in a non-GT. The 'A' code motor was identical in every respect to the 2bbl 'C' code motor, with the only exception being that the 'A' code had a 4bbl carb and intake. The fact that the motor came out of a GT has no effect on the value. If the top loader has a tag with the code HEH-S, that would have value because that's for a 5 bolt K code. An HEH- T or HEH-BX would be for a 6 bolt K code and would also have value. Any of those three would be worth something in the 1500 range, assuming that everything is ok with it. If the tag code is an RUG- something, that's going to worth something in thousand dollar range, again, assuming that it is in a good working condition and the case hasn't been cracked or something. If the motor is a K code motor, that would have value because of some of the parts it has, like the heads, carb, fan, balancer, main caps, etc... but being a GT wouldn't have any effect on that. Hope that helps.
