Hi everyone. I have a 69 with a 351W. New aluminum radiator and 50/50 pre-mix coolant about a year and a half ago. Car runs amazing with no overheating issues. Today I was going through my fluids and when I popped the radiator cap the coolant wasn't its typical "clear neon green". It was more of an orange/brown and not clear. Is this potentially oil mixing in my coolant, Or just fluid needing replacing? The car has had a few stints of sitting for a month or two without being driven or started. I also live near the ocean. With some nicer weather I have recently been driving it more. I have attached pics. Thanks for the feedback.
What color was it to begin with ? If green, then yes, get rid of it. Typically coolant in oil will show up on dipstick as milky looking. You would need a block testing kit to check the coolant for traces of exhaust gasses. NAPA sells them.
If oil had gotten into the cooling system, it would be floating on top of the coolant in the radiator and reservoir. This looks like some rust contamination or a possible mix of the green with leftover yellow in the block after radiator change.
rust, i have same issue and plan to drain and refresh, try picking up some rust-inhibitor. If you had something in your coolant or visa-versa, you'd know it. This are not new motors with new internals. A rust-inhibitor is a petroleum based additive that coats the inside of the coolant passages to limit rust.
