This is my first post and i'm absolutely stumped to find reason why the vin plate on the dash says that my 1969 convertible 302 is in fact a hard top.
Door plates, registration document and fender plate state : 9T03F135***(convertible)
Yet the dash plate says : 9T01F135***(hardtop)
Surely the dash plate can't be wrong can it?
How can the numbers match completely but the plate which i was to believe is the most trustworthy way of identifying the car tell me that my convertible 302 should be a hardtop. This seems impossible.
Please help me. What should i do about it? I'm confused.
Hiya, welcome to the site.
I'd suggest asking this member named Veronica, she knows the classics better than anyone here that I know of. She can help you out.
Well, I have heard of VIN screw ups from Ford and it's very possible this is one of them since all the digits line up except for the body style. Only one car from each factory was produced with the sequential number 135xxx that yours has and since it has the same factory code one of those VINs is wrong.
I would contact Marti Autoworks with both complete VINs and he can tell you which is correct although I'm betting it's the convert one and the dash tag is a mis-stamp.
When we think of how many of these units were produced, the possibility for VIN screw ups is probably more common than we would imagine. The VIN on the fender rail is the one that really counts. As long as this is correct in relation to the title, you shouldn't have to worry. There is a screw up with the VIN on my 67 at the fender rail. The letters/numbers are OK, but they stamped it in three times instead of the usual twice. Two of the VINs are exposed and the other is under the edge of the outer fender which is correct.
