Removal of the switch is much easier if you remove the gauge cluster first. This will give you access to the switch from above, and there is much more room. Be careful when you are unplugging the wiring from the switch body, it likely has been attached since your car was new and will be a bit stubborn. Yanking around too much could damage the wiring at the connector, and that will be an entirely new headache to deal with.

Inside the switch there is an internal circuit breaker as well as a few contacts that can get dirty and affect operation. Replacing is the safest and best route to take, so you are on the right path.

I just did this a few months ago, as my headlights were blinking after a few minutes of use (internal breaker shot). I got a new switch at the local auto parts store and it works fine.

Another upgrade you may wish to consider is wiring in relays for your headlamps, to take the load off of your original harness. Your headlight and dimmer switch will control the relays, instead of pulling all that current through 43+ yr old wiring. I did this upgrade as well, and my headlights are super bright, like a new car. Here is a website I found that has been a HUGE help:

Default !966 Mustang Headlight Switch

I'm tying to remove the headlght switch. I pulled out the intrument panel, removed the wire plug from the switch and losened the nut that says 'lights' in front of the pull-our nob but I can figure would how to get the nob off and loosening the nut didn't seem to help much with getting the switch out. My intrument panel lights don't work and I suspect it's th dimmer. Any ideas? Thanks!
