Default 1966 Mustang GT Wheel Size Question

I am considering changing my stock wheels and tires on my 66 GT Coupe to a larger wheel. I was wondering if anyone has advice on what size fits best taking into account back-spacing, etc. I dont want to go too big, but something that is going to look nicer than the stock 14" wheels. Any recommendations would be great.

go to Dodgestang Archives. they have an entire wheel and tire size chart under the mustang section.

I put 15" x 7" Magnum 500's on mine and used BFG Radial T/A tires with the white lettering, looks very aggressive. Something else I wouldn't mind trying are FR500 style wheels. You'll be hard-pressed to fit anything larger than 9" wide in the back, I believe. I also think that anything larger than 18" begins to look ridiculous. And also, if you have a replacement rear quarter, my wheels rub on the weld when weighted down with passengers, so good bodywork is necessary.

I put Torque Thrust 15X 8.5 all around on my 66. On the rear I have 235/60/15 & on the front 215/60/15 (about 1" smaller in diameter). No clearance issues & I think it looks good. Originally had 235/60/15 on the front and they look good, but they rubbed whether turning the wheel or hitting a bump they don't fit on the front.
Good Luck

This link is nice as it allows you to search for wheel/tire packages by make, year, and model. Also after you select your vehicle and the results come up, just above the first result it will give you the specs of the wheel you are looking for. Good infofor you to shop around with or buy from these guys they have pretty reasonable deals on the packages and will offset sizes if you wish. Bear in mind they are conservative on the measurements so you might not get the exact answer if you are trying to put those drag radials under there

Here is a chart that lists tire and wheel sizes and modifications needed for fitment. I think I got it here somewhere. Enjoy.

After a lot of consideration I finally went with 17x7 in the front with 225/45/17 and a 4 inch backspace, and 17x8 in the rear with 245/45/17 and a 5 inch (custom) backspace. The wheels are TTII. They look really good and no clearance issues. This is on a 66 coupe cloned into a GT. The front is dropped about 1 inch and I'm using mid-eye 5 leafs in the rear which drops it a little bit. Ultimately, I needed to go with 17s to accommodate the Wilwood disk brakes and I'm very happy with the result. I think 15 or 16s would look great as well and with 15 you could go with the lettered BFGs

Check out my combination.... I get many compliments. I have 15x7 with 225 60 15 GT Qualifiers. It looks aggressive and performs nice.

On our 65 falcon we did 15x7 Sport Stars from Jegs, and Im thinking about doing FR500 17x9s all the way around on my 66 stang, with 255s all the way around, Mustangs Unlimited.com has a billet wheel adapter kit to put the newer wheels on the older mustangs!! That include the right spacers to make the offset perfect!!

That is the best looking combination and the biggest front tire that will fit on 65-66 I believe. This picture looks very familiar, I think I saw this car for sale about a year ago...

15x7 are nice rims however if you do get the 225/60/15 tires you need wheel backspacing between 3.75 and 4. I have Magnum 500 wheels on my '66 coupe, with 215/60/15 in the front and 225/60/15 on the back and I get tire rub on the rear. My backspacing is 4.25, which I do need to change.

Just my experience.
