Default New help please! 460 in a 1973 Mustang fastback

I havent bought the motor yet but I just wanted to make sure that a 460 will bolt up without any major problems. Its going in a 73 fastback that came stock with a 351 Clevland. Will the 429 stock mounts work? Do I need to change frame mounts and engine mounts? Can I get the parts at the local auto parts supply?

The 460 is coming out of a E350 van.

Also it comes with a C6 tranny. Will that bolt up as well?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nathan

IMO the 351 is better. i do believe you can use the 429 mounts. im not sure that it will be a smooth fit with the 460 cuz the biggest they had in that year was a 429

So the 429 and 460 are not the same actual block?

Yes, they are the same block. use the 429 motor mounts for 71-73 mustang, there isn't a frame mount, just a hole throught the crossmember. Should be able to get mounts from autozone etc. You will have to use the trans from the van since the 429/460 use the big bellhousing pattern and 351w/c 289 302 use the small bellhousing c6.

Thats exactly what I needed to know. Thanks!
One more question........That 460 ought to give me quite a bit of HP right? I would go back with a 351 but I cant seem to find a good one locally for a decent price. i dont want to do a rebuild right now if i can help it. I just found this van today. I can get the entire van for $800. It has a dana 60 rear that I am sure I can make a few bucks on.

the truck ( or any post '72 ) 460's don't make alot of horsepower stock, usually like 250hp but they always make ALOT of torque, 400ft lbs around 2400rpm. Which torque is what you need to motivate the heavier 71-73 mustangs. I would guess that van motor in a '73 with 2.75 gears would still run mid 14's and could burn tires for a city block. The 429/460's respond very well to cams, intake, headers etc. The biggest problem they had stock was low compression 7.9 - 8.2:1 a set of flat top pistons help a bunch to raise compression and improve horsepower and torque even more. something to think about when you overhaul it.

Yes the 429 and 460 are both 385 series only blocks are different are the cobra jet and super cobra jet have 4 bolt mains. The 460 you'll need headers for it the 429 ones will work you can get them from Mustangs Unlimited - The Source for Mustang Parts, Shelby Parts, Cougar Parts and Accessories and Crites Restoration - Parts List By Model both of those have the motor mounts and brackets too also Ford Powertrain Applications has shortys Ford Powertrain Applications
And stsvt they are not really that heavy around the 3400lbs range the sn95 and up are about that much. For power new pistons rods heads get cobra jet or even super cobra jet ones you can make 500hp and 600 foot pounds easy with one.

Well I just found another motor. Same guy has a 302 that has just been rebuilt. It has a mild cam and GT40 heads for $1000. Whats the better deal?

302 built $1000 or entire van with old but running good 460 and C6 tranny for $800?

I still need a motor and tranny

I'd take the van. smoking the tires through 3rd and chirping the rest seems like fun. If it's for road racing and such, you should take the 302. Weekend cruising and drag racing, 460.

OK well now I have found a 429 out of a 71 Thunderbird. Is it any better than the 460?

I am sorry to ask so many questions. This is my first Ford and I cant make a decision on a motor. The 302 is def out now. Its between the 71 Thunderbird 429 for $1100 and the 77 Van 460 for $800. Both cars are complete but rough other than the drivetrain. They both are in good running condition.
I here the 429 has higher compression and 360 hp from the factory. I dont know about the 460.

Thanks again!

If you get the van, you can sell the shell, or at least the rear end and make some more cash and buy yourself a cam and intake manifold. Should free up quite a few ponies.

Yea but I think I have decided to go with the 429 in the T-bird. Its pretty much a direct bolt in. The guy seems to be a little more of an honest person and that goes a long way in my book.
