Default 1968 Mustang coupe cost effective engine solution

All,
I found a good deal on a 68 coupe (3 speed 6cyl). I have a 69 Boss that is almost done but I dont want to drive her everyday. The 6 cylinder that is in it needs to be rebuilt (a kit costs about $300). I also found a 302 (with 5 speed transmission $600) and two replacement 6 cylinders (240 ci for $100 or a 223 ci for $250) The key is cost effective as I dont want to take away tooo much from the boss fund so here are my questions...

1. Will the two 6 cylinders work with the stock tranny even though there are different cu in specs from the original?
2. Just rebuild for $300 although I dont have a lot of engine rebuild experience?
3. Would I have to do a lot of modification to get the 302 combo to fit? I would have to have this professionally done as I have no experience with this, would it be really expensive?

To do the v8 swap right is engine tranny motor mounts and brackets cross member if you change to a different tranny.Drive shaft 8 inch rear end 5 lug hubs and brakes.I believe all inline 6 from 67 and newer have the same tranny bolt pattern but the inline 6 vs v8 one are gear differently.

The best cost effective solution is to rebuild your current 6 cyl, even if you have to sub some of the work out.

The worst will be the 302 conversion as it needs many things changed over, see Andrew's post, and there are other parts that will nickle and dime you like the radiator, fuel lines, accelerator linkage/pedal rod and engine gauge wiring. Unless you have a complete V8 donor from that era the costs can add up fast.

The 170 & 200 6s share the same bolt pattern. The later 250 that was offered in the Mustang doesn't. The 250 actually has a V8 bolt pattern and requires a small block V8 suspension and is the only 6 to come with 5 lugs from the factory back then, it is a "large" 6 cyl. I have no info on the 240 or 223 but my guess is they won't directly mate to that 3 spd.

I would just rebuild the current 200 you have in your car and enjoy it as is and concentrate on the Boss. The 200 is a good, dependable motor either left as stock or pepped up. They are "choked" from the factory with the 1 bl carb and exhaust manifold design but there are upgraded carbs, intake/head and manifolds to make them breathe easier and add some performance if you like.

The 240 is a truck motor. It's very tall, and won't fit in an early Mustang.

thanks everyone for the help the rebuilds look really expensive for some reason so I may have to pass this one up. I am looking for something cheap and I dont want to have to drop a grand into a rebuild. especially not on a 6 cyl

If you can get the car for a good price then $1000 on an engine rebuild really isn't that bad, especially if the rest of the car is decent. It will give you a classic to drive when you don't want to take the Boss out, the 6 cyl should be fine for what you want of the car and the most economical. It is up to you though as you'll be spending the money and using the car.

Default Remanufactured

Hey I did a whole study on remanufactured engines, warranty and cost on a 302 Check it out here
Dan's 1969 Mustang March 2006

You can get a remanufactured engine with a 5 year 100000 mile warranty for about $1200-$1300 dollars. The 6 is less I am sure and all you do is out it in. The engine i got has been great and it saved me the work of a reuild, plus I got a warranty on it.
