Default 2.80 gears with AOD?

Has anyone had real experiance with using the 2.80 gears found in a 66 coupe with a AOD trans swap??Want to do the swap but would be to expensive if I have to change rear ends also. Thanks Allan

Should get great gas mileage, not so good for hole shots.

You don't have to change the rear end gears. Putting the AOD transmission in is going to be a great improvement on it's own. But when & if you change your rear end gears you'll have the best of both worlds. The car will be much quicker (night & day) & cruising on the highway your RPM's will still be low.
Good Luck

Your performance in the 1st 2nd and 3rd gear will be the same with the AOD as it is now with the C4, basically 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1. Once you hit overdrive (4th) your revs will really come down as you cruise along at highway speed.

You could make it quicker by changing your gear ratio, but in my opinion (having a car with 2.80 gears), these Mustangs are so light that with a healthy engine they are quite peppy off the line even with those highway gears.
