Default Shifter 1966 Mustang automatic a little loose

I have a 1966 automatic mustang and the shifter is a little loose from left to right. I removed the cover and took the nut off but it seems that the bolt/nut wasn't holding anything on. nothing changed when I took the nut off the bolt. I thought the shifter would be able to be pulled out. I tighten the nut all the way and it just sits snug against the shifter. Can anyone help. When I look from underneath, the other end is welded on so there isn't anything to adjust underneath to make the shifter a tight fit. Please give me some suggestions. I read that there are rubber bushings or stoppers that should be there? is that correct. I don't have any, also if that's true what is the nut for. Also I have three wires comming out of the carpet right above the shifter, what are they? (seatbelt warning lights?)

yeah, you need to pull the shifter out and replace the plastic shift bushings ($2.50 for two). The wires go to the shifter bezel and light up which gear your in.

How do I pull the shifter out. The light is also hooked up but there are three other wires coming from under the carpet right above the shifter.

But if anyone can still help out with those wires that would be great. One is green(lime green/yellow) one is blue and the last is black

Sounds like your car must have had a console in it's preivous life. Check out Veronic's home page & find wiring diagrams. It looks like a console car would have 3 wires right there by the shifter, BLACK-BLUE WIRE, GREEN-YELLOW WIRE, & A BLACK WIRE.
