Default 9 inch rear end axle problem

I have a 9 inch rear end housing. A 3.7 gears centersection. The housing is a total of 52 inches in length. The two axles that I received with the housing are 24 1/2 and 28 3/4 in length from the end of the bearings to the end of the axles. When the axles are inserted in the housing and fit into the centersection, neither axle bearing seats into the housing. Are the axles too long or am I doing something wrong? Please help

Did you try turning them as you push them in?

Yeah, there is a distinct sound when the axles hit bottom. Like metal to metal and they turn with the centersection put they won't completely seat.

See if you can only install one axle, leaving the other completely out. The axle bearing should fit into the housing just a bit on the snug side, so be aware of this. You may have to tap on it with a soft faced hammer to get it to seat. If one axle seats with no problem, then you may find that they're too long and hitting one another.

Another thing you can do is to take a tape measure and insert it into the axle tube until the end hooks to the inside surface of the differential spider gear where the axle would ride. Measure the distance to the bearing surface or any place of reference. Compare the measurement to the axles.

Thanks, The Greek. I didn't think about measuring inside the housing. I have measured the outside and the measurements don't match. I have tried to insert one and it will not seat. The axle still sticks out avout 3/4 of an inch.

Hello. If you just recently bought this rear end and the axles were off to side, instead of the far more obvious and convenient point of storage, installed in the axle housing, there could be a reason for that.
