Default 302 Motor Differences?

It looks like I'm picking up a 73 Mustang Convertible with a 302. I noticed the power drops on the 302 every year until 72/73. Could anyone tell me what causes this? Is it just different compression?

The reason I ask is because I'd like to get the engine to around 300hp at the crank. I'm planning on grabbing the Edelbrock 2091 kit for it, but I'd like to address whatever changes they made to the engine from 69 to 73 so that I can start with more power.

Are there any parts I can borrow from the older or newer 302's that would easily "bolt" up to mine?

Also, as this is my first post, I'd like to say "hi" and remark on how resourceful and friendly these forums are. I've been trying to pick which forums to register in and these seemed like the best!

Hello. : If you replace the heads, intake, cam, lifters, etc..., which is what that kit has, all that remains of the 302 is the block and the bottom end. That will pretty much erase entirely the little differences between one 302 and another.
And, thank you. I'm glad to hear that you have decided to register here. This is a very nice bunch of people here.

Welcome to the forum. You need to find another distributor. The one on the engine has a vacuum controlled timing retard that is controlled by that vacuum switch on the thermostat housing. The range of the centrifical advance may be limited also. They really went crazy in the early 1970s trying to limit emissions due to federal govt. mandate. They lowered compression, retarded engine timing, and used enough vacuum hose to circle the earth a few times.

All of the above plus the 302's between 73-76 had a .023 higher deck height to really help drop the compression ratio down to 8:1.

So if I do these modifications will I be around my goal of 300hp crank?

Hi again. Assuming that you will also have something in the 600 cfm range for a carb and nice, free-breathing exhaust system, 300 hp would be a reasonable expectation.
