Default 1966 Ford Mustang 289 transmission problems???

I drive a 1966 mustang 289, automatic, with around 100,000 miles and it's in as far as I know (and the opinions of a couple of friends) in pretty good condition.

The other night I drove home it was driving fine and then the next mornining I went to put it in reverse to back out of my driveway and for some unknown reason to me the car will not move in reverse. It will shift into reverse on the shifter but when I press the gas it just revs up but does not move.

I don't know a lot about cars but a few people have suggested transmission problems.

Any one have the same problem? know how to fix it? know anything about this?

Responses would be GREATLY appreciated

Check the transmission fluid level, if the transmission is worn usually the fluid would turn from red to almost burn & will have a burnt smell. If the level is good it might be time to have the transmission rebuilt.

I agree with Bob. Low fluid level will produce your symptoms (slippage). And as Bob mentioned worn/toasty fluid can indicate a problem. Checking the condition and level of the fluid is your starting point.

Don't forget to check your linkage underneath. It seems odd that it suddenly stopped. Usually when the fluid is low it'll kick in and out of gear at a stop.
