i've got a pair of FoMoCo heads on my 289, and i was wondering if theres a certain way to tell which ones they are? like maybe a certain number on the heads, and where the number is. thanks.

Hello. If you pull the valve covers off, you will see either '289' or '302' cast into the top of the heads, along with a date code which will be up near the lip that the valve cover sits on. If they are 289 heads. You only have two possibilities. Either they are K code heads or they are not. If they are K code heads, they will have screw-in rocker studs instead of the press-in, and the valve springs will be sitting down inside little machined pockets that are about 3/16 deep, instead of on basically flat pedestals. If they are 302 heads, let us know what the date code says and someone can run that and tell you which heads you have. Hope that helps.
what are the K-code heads? and is there anything special about them? but i'm pretty sure they're not the normal heads, the motor has been suped up by the previous owner, titanium valves, mild cam, etc. was just wandering if there's anything special about the heads i got on there, but i'll pull the valve cover off tomorrow and get that number.

There is a casting knot on the outside front of each head, and it will have a number cast on it. If it is a 18,19,20,or 21 number you will have the "K" code head; otherwise, the head needs to be checked as discribed above.
Best,
