The only real choice you have for an auto would be an A4OD overdrive-available in most all Ford cars in the 80's and early 90's. Just make sure it comes from a 5.0L car. You may need to modify the crossmember-not sure and the driveshaft length will be different but you may be able to find a company that sells one for an AOD swap.

Thanks CJ, is that AOD or A4OD? i thought this last one needs the tranny computer? AOD does not.

i am off my tree?

Yeah, it's normally just known as a Ford AOD. There was the AODE(mid 90's) but stay away from that since it needs a computer as I understand.

Actually i have a 1987 EFI full drive train from a mustang GT, but i had not planed to swap it just yet, so i guess i could use that transmision plus a new cross member, correct?

do you know if the drive shaft from the donor will work?

regards

If you have a whole drivetrain from an 87 GT use it all-engine and trans. The driveshaft will definitely not be compatible from either car. You'll have to have a frankenstein made out of both of them unless you can find a company that sells a shaft for doing what your doing. You might want to search the threads for an AOD swap as I'm sure it's been done and commented on before here.

Everything you will need to do this can be bought from Early Mustang AOD Conversion Kit, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973 as far as the drive shaft you can replace the yoke or cut yours down i believe you cut a 1 inch off it but don't hold me to that. Also if you have long tube headers you might have to tweak them a bit.Good luck with it.
