Default Edlebrock Carb, stumble at idle

Hello all. I just installed a rebuilt 1406, electric choke on a 289 with a mild cam and automatic transmission. The engine idles rough (stumbles) but when driven runs pretty well. I have checked the timing set at 10 degrees, checked the plugs, light brown in color no oil or gas deposits , gaped at 34. There is black residue in the tail pipes but does not smell like gas. I don't know if the rods and jets are orginal settings, the rods have 7547 stamped on them, if that means anything. I have searched this site and have not found a condition such as this. It seems to me the engine is running rich but apparently is not. I have not run a vacuum check because frankly I never have done one, although I have a gauge. Any help would be apprieciated.
Thanks

Have you adjusted the idle screws on the front of the carb? If you haven't, turn each the same amount about 1/4 - 1/2 turn each time and wait a few seconds between each adjustment to check for any changes in the idle. If it just gets worse which ever way you begin adjusting, in or out, just go back to your orignial setting, so keep track of the # of turns, and try adjusting the other way. Does the idle ever get better as the engine warms up? That's all I got.

Edlebrock has a great web site. you can click on there tech tab and down load the coplete manual for the 1406 carb. By the way .075 x .047 (7547) are the stock rods, and .098 are the stock jets. I just printed out the manual yesterday to rejet my 1406 from Seattle to Windsor Co. altitude.

Any update Jazzy? I have similar issue, new Edelbrock carb, runs great, but has a slight stumble at idle. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it, just once in a while it'll skip.
