Default 1973 turn signals

Hello all!

Here's a new electrical problem! Now that my stop lights are finaly back on line, my turn signals are letting me down!

When I switch my turn signal right or left nothing happens! So 1st reflex was to change the flasher unit, didn't change anything...

So I took the steering wheel off to check the comodo : meccanicaly it looks OK, all wires are connected, the switches are working and when I switch it on, it turns my stop lights off as it's suppose to do!

So i'm clueless as what to check out now!

I don't know if it could be a cause but the way I had my stop lights to work again was to bypass the + wire going to the break pedal as it was dead, using an other + wire. As it seams the turn signals and stop lights are connected, would it be of incidence???

Not knowing your capabilities, would it pay to get it looked at by an auto Electrician.
Could work out cheaper than having a burnout.

I'm having similar issues with my '65. The right front blinker won't work. replaced flasher unit, the bulb is fine,all other blinkers work, I just can't get power to it.
I'm hoping to find if it is a ground or a contact problem.

You might be right but the thing is I'm trying to learn as much as I can and to know my car by looking into it as much as I can!
Usualy, once I tried all I can I end up bringing my car to a professional!
The other thing is, professionals working on classic Mustangs ore not realy easy to come by in France and are usualy very expensive because of that!

Jett, the wiring for the brake lights is connected to the directional signal. The directional signal switch turns off the brake light to the side that you are turning. This way the bulb is allowed to blink. The bulb uses the same filiament for the brake and the directional signal.

The circuit is a bit complex and I strongly advise you to get a set of electrical diagrams. It seems that you have bypassed the power to the signal switch when you went to repair the brake lights.

The dir. signal switch is also complex. It has contacts that look like "U" shaped springs that are connected to each other at the base of the "U". This is located on the arm that rocks back and forth when you move the signal lever. If these springs/contacts are bent, the switch will not function correctly. These springs/contacts are responsible for making the signal lever return to the neutral position as well as to activate the signal and at the same time deactivate the brake light.

Thanx for all those precisions! As far as I can see, the signal switch is OK, U shaped springs are not bent and still connect, switch turns on and off OK...

So I figure the bypassing realy is the problem!
I'll try to come back to original configuration and then, solve my Brake light problem more accuratly!

As for the diagrams, I have the Workshop manual but it doesn't help much... 1st it's all verry generic and 2nd, this car had 35 years of cheap repars on the electrical system...
