Default Instrument Gauge problems

My constant voltage regulator for the gauges failed.
I read somewhere you can convert the old one to a solid state regulator with radio shack parts. Anyone have any info on this?

I did a search in the Classic Mustang section and found this.

albert56 posted this a couple of months ago:

You can buy a solid state regulator at a radio shack store, LM7805 which is a 5V regulator, and the pin configuration should be on the back of the package, pin 1 is the input, 2 is ground and the tab, pin 3 is the output, you also have to install 2 .1mf capactors betwen the input and ground and the output and ground terminals..

Here's the thread:

THANKS!
I should have checked here rather than spending an hour with my old buddy Google!
Those are the part numbers and values I was looking for. I will update thread with pictures and the wiring diagram when I make and install it.
Parts from Radios Shack are $3 and a new one is $67.95 (Mustang+)

When you measure the output of the instrument cluster voltage regulator what is a good reading? Mine is 5v but it pulsates about twice/second.

The instantaneous voltage is either battery voltage (12-14V) or nothing. Its almost a turn signal flasher that cycles on and off about twice a second so the 'average' is around 5-6 V. Its hard to say exactly what your meter should read since it depends upon how your meter responds to varying voltages. Sounds like your CVR is OK.
