Default MSD Blaster 2 coil installation

I haven't asked MSD themselves yet, but does anybody know what the voltage readings, etc. should be to install the MSD blaster 2 coil on a stock points ignition?

I've read "put a ballast resistor on" 10 times, but no specs to say why. The volts is already reduced to 9 volts to my original coil. Some people seem to say run a new wire, install the resistor, but isn't that the same as what is stock? I'd like some answer with a multimeter involved if somebody has it. Thanks.

If the wiring to the coil is original, there's a ballast resistor wire already in the circuit. Voltage to the coil should be between 8 to 9 volts. You don't need to change or add anything.

The reason for the reduced voltage is to keep the coil from overheating and the ignition points will live longer because of reduced arcing between the contacts. Arcing causes the contact surfaces to pit.

Thanks for the info Greek. Yea, the voltage was a little shy of 9. Now I just have to find a spot to try to mount it vertically as MSD asks preferably for. I wonder if it's that picky.
