I have the common problem with my 1966 Mustang, a previous owner cut the radio hole out of the dash, so I need a radio repair plate to reinstall an original radio. I have seen both a plastic version and a metal version of the repair plate out there.

From someone who has done this repair, what are the pro's and con's of a metal plate vs. plastic repair plate.

Obviously, the metal repair plate has to be welded in and ground down and repainted, and the plastic one, I have no idea how that would adhere, glue??

What are others experiences, and has anyone used the plastic repair plate for the radio?

I knew someone who put the plastic one on wanting to save money. It was difficult for him to get the paint to match, and attaching it the way it told him to, he hit a speedbump and it popped out, so the radio was holding the plate in place, and the radio was being held in by its rear bracket. Plus I think the plastic would be kind of flimsy. It may be more trouble, but I think the metal one is the better choice.

I am in agreement, the metal one is the way to go with this, I just had not heard of anyone actually using the plastic one, until now.

Anyone have any tips or things they wish they had known and would have changed while putting in a radio repair plate?

I would rather know the pitfalls up front, though it does seem kind of straight forward, weld the new one in place. Any welding tips to make it look better?
