Default 1965 2bbl carb swap?

I bought a 65 C code coupe about three or four weeks ago. It has been mostly redone, but still has some great strides to make -- new paint, emblems, etc. It is a solid car, no rust, very little bondo (only one spot on rear qtr panel), but one area that I am struggling is under the hood. It was flooding due to a stuck float. Rebuilt the carb. That took care of the flooding, but it would never smooth out and went dead when shifted into gear. I changed the plugs (set them to .035), checked and set the points(.017), dwell (27), timing (8 btdc), installed new vac. advance, but it is still rough. A friend had another oldFord carb, bolted it on and that seemed to do the trick. I was able to idle it down, it didn't go dead when shifted into reverse or drive. But when I got out on the road at say, 45 mph, it started bogging down. Changed the fuel filter, which seemed to help it, but not completely. I don't know what carb we switched to, can't see any i.d. info. But I would like to start with a brand new or remanufactured 2 bbl carb -- one that I can identify -- and I need to know what some good options are? I don't understand CFM. What is it? What did the original carb have (CFM-wise)? And what CFM do I need (Not too little, not too much?) I am trying to erase all doubts about the carb. If I know it is good and that don't fix it, I will know my problem is somewhere else. Thanks for the help>

honestly bro i have a 2bbl and they suck period. i would recomend going to a edelbrock aluminum manifold and jsut do a 4 bbl swap. its very easy. and jsut put a holley or demon 650cfm card either double pumper or vacuum secondaries what ever floats your boat

CFM is Cubic Feet per Minute, or a measure of how much air the carb can flow through itself. So, it all comes down to you and what you want out of it. I'm currently running an Autolite 2100 2v on my 72 cope with a 351, and after rebuilding the carb, i have had zero problems with it. To keep it stock, you'll want to try and find an Autolite/Motocraft 2100 series carburetor, and I can't remember what venturi size your application calls for.

I've got a 1965 Mustang Convertible with the original 289 and 2 barrel carb. I rebuilt the engine and had a local carb shop rebuild the original carb over 10 years ago. It still runs great! Probably not as quick as it could be with a 4 barrel. Still peppy enough to be fun to drive. Being a convertible it is more for cruising than wide open performance.

If I had a fastback I probably would have gone with a 4 barrel.
