Default 1966 engine won't start

I have a 1966 mustang with at 289 4 speed. The other day I was pulling into a driveway and tried to put into first gear and it wouldn't go. Then the clutch started jumping and knocking and the car was sputtering, shut the car off and now the car won't even turn over. THe starter engages but just makes a clunk noise. Is it possible I tore the clutch up and and pieces are stuck in the starter??? looking for any kind of help, thinking of opening the inspection plate and seeing what is going on?? anyways any help would be appreciated. thanks

Definitely sounds like a clutch issue. If you drive the car regularly, have you noticed any difference in the clutch travel or going in gear over the past few weeks/days/months?

did notice the last week or so it was making a weird ticking noise from the clutch, and when i pressed it in a bit it went away, now it seems like there is a 1/4 the way travel without engaging. Going to pull the starter and inspection plate to see what might be happening......hard to get at the one starter bolt with the headers.....kind of weird that the car won't even turn over......hmmmmm
