Default Have you used POR-15 to seal your tank?

I've read some good things about it. Any good/bad experiences here?

Would you recommend that over a new tank?

i have only had good experiences painting some metal tubes. you can hit that stuff with a hammer and it wont chip. but on a gas tank, i dont know, i guess you could, it is just some heavy stuff. i guess it depends on wat you are usin it for.

por 15 is about 48 bucks a quart. a new tank is about 114 bucks a tank. if the por 15 flakes at all and it plugs your fuel filter etc. well the cost goes up. for my money a new tank is cheap insurance. very easy to replace, I think it would be much less of a pain than trying to coat a rusted tank and hope it worked. just my 2 cents.

If you are going through all that trouble just get a new tank along with a new sending unit/pickup and be done with it. Trying to mess around and coat the tank with sealers is just asking for trouble. You'll probably end up spending more in the long run that way and not be happy with the results.

If the replacement tanks weren't available then I could understand trying to save it but the new reproduction tanks are excellent quality and very reasonable in cost.

Where would you recommend getting the new tank and sending unit from? It's a 20 gal tank isn't it? What about aluminum vs steel?

Would you probably get new lines also? I imagine shipping wouldn't be too happy (except for maybe with Summit Racing).

I agree with changing the fuel tank, but if your fuel gauge reads accraute now, stay with the old fuel sending unit. Just order a new gasket for it. I use Mustangsunlimited, great customer service from what I have experienced.

I bought my tank, sending unit, and new stainless lines from National parts Depot: NPDLink | National Parts Depot

Luckily I didn't have to deal with shipping since they are only an hour away and I could pick up the parts.

If your lines look like they have heavy rust scale then you might want to replace. Otherwise just blow it out with compressed air.

one other thing. look for a tank with a drain plug. not all of them have them. that way if your sending unit does go bad it is a lot easier to replace it later. as far as where to buy it there are tons of vendors out there. I use mustangs plus for most of my stuff. they are out of stockton california. shipping really was not bad either. I would recommend before you install it to clean the outside with a good solvent and spray some clearcoat on it. you can buy it in a rattle can for about three bucks and that will help protect the tanks outer surface from rusting as fast.

Thanks guys! I don't think things are to bad, I'm going to try and confirm, blow out the lines, and see how she runs.

I've used a sealer called Seal-All (I think thats how its spelled). It comes in a red and yellow tube. I've used it to seal gas tanks and it works great. It dries clear.

Just replaced a tank on a '66 last Sunday. Took longer to drive to NPD and back than to do the work. Good idea to also replace the sender retainer ring, gasket and filter as long as it's apart. Might also replace the rubber filler neck hose at the same time. About $180 total and no garbage to get in the system.

As cheap as they are to replace I wouldn't waste the time trying to seal one up.

POR15 in the right place is great, but I have had it peel off in very chunks. In a gas tank I would worry about it peeling.
