Default Differential pumkin casing - odd id tag - need help to decipher

Hey guys...I've scoured the forum and internet for this question but came up empty handed. I wanted to see what everyone else thought this id tag deciphers to.

WCZ-V1 is the casing code. From what I've found, this decodes as an 8" rear end from I believe a cougar or '67+ mustang. That'd make sense, seeing as how I pulled it from a '68 mustang. However - the odd thing is I can't find anywhere what the "1" from the V1 means. The Ford listing I found for all ford axles shows listings for three letters followed by one letter, none with an additional number. Any ideas?

Anybody else want to confirm what my differential is?
ID is 2 79 88B 9308BB. 2.79 gears, open...need to confirm the rest.

Any help would be appreciated, sorry if this was posted somewhere and I didn't find it.

The axle code WCZ-V1 indicates that it is an 8" open diff. used from 67-70, 2.79:1 ratio using 28 spline axle shafts.

The Ford info states that the #1 part of V1 is a "Numerical Code Shown When Interchangeability Is Affected"

The 88B, are you sure that it isn't 8B8. If it is 8B8 this decodes as 1968, February, 8th week. The date built.

The 9308BB is the Plant Code if it's the third group of numbers/letters on the same line on the tag as the ratio and date code.

Thanks Greek for the reply. So what exactly does it mean when the interchangeability is affected designated by that 1? Issues when I swap gears down the road here or something along those lines? Oh - more than likely the tag would be 8B8 - when I read it a while back it was a little worn and it was hard to tell if it was an 8 or a B - the lines weren't very defined from the stamping.

Let me know on that interchangeability issue. Thanks for the help!

The best that I can figure is that there is a component in the differential that sets it apart from other 8" diffs. It may be something relating to the number of spider gears 2 or 4, the inside or outside diameters of the bearings or some other component which would set it apart from others.

I really doubt that it would be something major to prevent you from swapping out the ring and pinion with other diffs, but a smaller component.

If you were to get a diff. rebuild kit, the #1 would probably set the kit apart from others and the non-interchangeable parts would be in this kit. A side by side comparison of parts from another kit would be the only way to really know unless a drivetrain shop would have the difference listed in their catalog.
