Default 1970 Mach 1 fuel tank removal

Hello,
I am working on my old Sunday cruiser. Having lots of fuel problems due to old stale gasoline (21) years old.
I need to remove the gas tank. It doesn't have straps but rather looks like screws around the perimeter.
Can someone please give me step by step instructions or a link to remove tank.
Does the gas tank unbolt from the trunk and come out through the trunk?

I appreciate any and all help......Jim

I am pretty sure that it does come through the trunk. I would go ahead and buy a new tank, after 21 years of gas sitting in that tank its probably rotten in there..

Default 1970 Mach 1 fuel tank removal

Hello Rare 5.0
Thanks for the reply. I am pretty certain I am going to try and replace the tank.
What I had done was pump out the old gas from right before the fuel pump. Then I put in a gallon of new gas. Siphoned out that. Then I put in 5 gallons of new treated gas.

I still had sticky needle and seat on a new Holley and the squirters weren't shooting fuel in when the pump was pressed.

I know the smart thing is to change the tank but I don't have the confidence I had when I was younger. I just like to research before starting but I think as you say the tank must go so I should order and while it is shipped continue research.

Nice looking car by the way. Thanks again.....Jim

First step is to drain all the gas out of it you can if it has a drain plug use it if not pumping it out can get fun.Once its empty or close to it you take the filler neck off and the fuel lines around the edge there is about 20 bolts that is all that holds the tank in.Once unbolted it lifts out the trunk.Only the 71 and up mustangs have straps on the tank. What did the inside of the tank look like look in it with a flash light little rust is ok but if it looks like the moon replace it.

Hello Andrew,
First thanks for the reply. I'm gonna try and look in the tank as you suggest.
The only reason I am thinking of replacing is I want to eliminate any gas issues.

I am 1005 certain the car runs but sticky carb parts etc have been a pain. I do have 2 filters on the gas line.

I thought that the tank comes out through the top but does this mean that the top of the tank is the bottom of the trunk? This seems weird unless there is some sort of plate above tank.

Also if I remove the screws do I need to support the tank or as I think is the tank supported by an "L" type of frame?

When I was younger I would have this car ripped apart and reassembled, I think I
am in a rut and just need to hear the car run and start easily. If I can do this I think I'll have the motivation to hit other things like control arm bushings which I can handle. Sorry I got carried away. Thanks for the info and help......Jim

There is a plate over the tank to level out the trunk if i remember right.Get you a manual on the car it can show you how to take anything apart.Did you flush the fuel line or replace it when you changed the gas in it.Yeah bad gas can mess a carb up easy.
