Default Can the Starter Contacts be replaced?

I've replaced the starter Contacts (the metal pieces) in some starters, others are sealed and won't allow you to. Can you replace them on a '69? I don't want to start disassembling things and get myself in trouble if it's not meant to be disassembled.

I never heard of anyone doing it. Why though? The solenoid is right on the inner fender or shock tower. I don't think you'd be saving alot either. The motor is just that, no contacts. The bendix engages when the motor spins. hope this helps.

Hello. A rebuilt starter with a lifetime warranty only costs about 30 bucks at any major auto parts chain store. These aren't like GM cars. The starter is separate from the solenoid, so there really isn't anything servicable in them. At least, not in a cost efficient way.

You can change the brushes and the bushings they are cheap. But most of the time I just go for the rebuilt because of the time factor.

Ok, I must be thinking of the solenoid. The starters that I've worked on previously, must have had the solenoid incorporated in it. It cost me about $2 to replace the contacts and fix the starter/solenoid.

Is it that involved of a process on this car? I'd still spend the $2 over $30 unless it's a real pain.

Still confused here the solenoid is right on the inner fender next to the battery you don't normally take this apart... the starter has bushes and yes you can change them if we are talking the same thing bushes and contacts...

Here's an example of what I'm referring to:

ok that is a delco type starter your ford I think unless someone has changed it. Has a solenoid right on the inner fender next to the battery which is a seal unit and not able to be rebuilt. But if it is a new style high torque ford starter you could change the contacts very much like the delco.

Ah, I see. I didn't realize that.

Did the delco type of unit come into existence later on? Are there advantages (or is that the high torque aspect)?

If the starter or solenoid goes out, is it recommended to replace them both with a high torque unit?

If it is orginal and works stay with it...all the parts are cheap... a rebuilt starter is like $30- $50, solenoid is maybe another $25. You can just replace whatever part isn't working. The High torque starter are mainly for high compression motors and run anywhere form $150 to $300. So if your going cheap stay with the OEM
