Default Brake Lights won't turn off 1967 mustang

I've got an interesting problem. My rear brake lights won't turn off. I went for a drive the other night and when I parked my car and turned off the ignition, my rear brake lights didn't turn off. I checked my lights switch and it was indeed off. I removed the rear bulb and the light stopped. When I put the bulb back in, the light was on again. Any ideas?

It sounds like your brake light switch is jammed/jamming. If you look at your brake pedal, there will be a switch with wires coming out of it near where it meets the brake pedal support. Check this switch, as it is what activates the brake lights. When you push down on the pedal, the switch presses down on a button which turns the brake lights on, and when you release it, the switch goes back to its original position, turning the brake lights off. It sounds like it is stuck in the on position.

That sounds like the problem, but it usually works the opposite way, when you push the pedal it releases the button and turns on the lights. Anyway, you probably need a new switch.

Hello. That would be my guess also. If you disconnect the two wire connector that is plugged into the brake light switch and the lights go out, then stick a paper clip or something into the two holes of the connector and the lights come back on, then the problem is definitely the switch. Hope that helps.

I have also found on my 67' that the hazard switch can be the cuplrit on this problem as well. Make sure the switch is pulled all the way out, and if it is try moving it slowly across it's range. I know mine was bad and at certain points it would turn the brake lights on.

This is a common problem with this type of switch. It's happened to me. I recommend replacing the switch because it will happen again even if you get the old switch to work. Make sure to get the switch for the type of brakes that you have. The switches are calibrated for either power or standard brakes, even though side by side the switches look the same there is a difference.

see if it goes out when you pull up on your pedal. Mine did this and the bushing was worn out on the brake pedal making it stick.

I've had the same problem recently and I have replaced the switch and the lights are still staying on. What are other possible problems?

Check installation. Is the nylon washer installed between the switch and the hairpin retainer clip?
