Default Starting Problem

Hey everyone, everyone here always helps me out and i've been away from the forum for some time. I got my 1966 mustang running and it was great. I parked it for about 4 months and wasn't driving it at all, I know. I'm sorry. Well, now the car won't start. I tried to jump the battery but just a sound comes from the starter solenoid. Nothing else happens. The starter does nothing and I need some help. The sound is nothing clicking or anything like this but like something trying to wind but something in the way. I need help, what should I do?

Well, the buzzing from the solenoid means that either the starter solenoid, alternator voltage regulator, or both have "expired". That was a problem when I got my car back from its engine rebuild last year.

Do the lights turn on bright? Does the horn work?

If not, it's probably the battery that's dead. A jump start often doesn't have enough juice, right away, to get the car to turn over.

I would first try putting the battery on a charger overnight and then try again. If you don't have a charger, bring it to a service station and have it checked & charged or replaced.

Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight.

The main components of the starting system are battery, ignition, starter solenoid and starter. If the battery is good, then look at the starter solenoid. It is cheap and easily replaced.

The voltage regulator has nothing to do with whether it will start or not. It controls the voltage when the car is already running.

The easiest check is to simply twist the battery terminal on the post. If it is loose, twist it in one direction until it gets tight, then try to start it. Now, If it is snug but there is corrosion on the post, twisting it will usually create contact. You can charge the battery but if the connection is bad, nothing will work. Obviously twisting the battery terminal is not a fix, but it will tell you what the problem is. If that isn't it, it might actually be the battery. Try jumping it. It might not start but you will deffinately hear a difference. It should at least go from buzzing to clicking. Remember, if a battery gets to dead it won't hold a charge. This should help you diagnose the problem.

did you try to jump the solenoid to get it to turn over. if you take a screw driver and touch it from the side of the solenoid with the battery cable on it and touch it to the pin on the front closest to that terminal it should turn over if the solenoid is bad. your just bypassing the internals of the solenoid

i think i had the exact same problem if i understand correctly. the solution is simple. your battery is prolly completely dead and when you jump it, there isnt enough time usually to recover most the charge. simply take it to a mechanics shop and have them charge it for like 45min. i did this with mine and it starts right up now. the mechanic i took it to said that mustangs since they are old have some electrical sapping/leakage after time from various things and the charge just fades or something. hope that helps.

Pull the starter and take it to one of the part stores. They'll check it for free. The starter housing needs to have good contact with ground as well as a good voltage source.

[quote=asps;1254447].. your battery is prolly completely dead... quote]

prolly? Is this from chat rooms or text message slang?

I just disconnect my battery when the car is idle for several months a year.
