Default Horn

I have attached a wiring diagram. You could check to see both horns have a good ground, I would also check the following

Check your fuses
See if you have power at the horn, put a multimeter on it and hit the horn
Is the horn button making contact
Do a contunity check of the wires
And the last thing it could be is the head light switch

Did they work when you got the car? If not, then it may be that your horn ring is missing its inards. If it is a 65 than check inside it to see if there is a metal plate with 2 points sticking out of it, and check to see if the wheel has 2 contacts. If it is a 64.5, then it should have only one brush I believe, becuase unlike 65 and up which had alternators, the 64.5 had a generator. If they worked when you got the car and they are the original horns, than maybe they just died of old age.

My horn works if I take off the cap and put the wires together, sometimes I get sparks flying on me though if I don't cover the wires back up right. The cap on my steering wheel doesnt have a horn button. I bought a standard horn button at auto zone. This may sound nuts but is there a way to install the horn button down by the high beam switch? Or do I need to invest in another cap for my steering wheel? Also will the button I got at the store even work or do I need something specific? Thanks!

looking on the mustangsunlimited site I found this Mustangs Unlimited - The Premier Source for Mustang, Shelby and Cougar Parts and Accessories
This is the cap that falls off my steering wheel when I hit bumps. And I have the grant wood steering wheel. Is there a way to make a horn work with this? I am not sure what parts I am missing, they have all sorts of buttons and rings on there. Please help me

You just identified the possible problem...a Grant Wheel. There was one on my 65 convertible when I first bought it and I had a few of the problems that you described, including the horn button popping off and landing in my while driving. Grant does make a rebuild kit for their wheels. I rebuilt mine, but was still not happy with things (turn signal cancel, noisy contacts, occasional sparks, etc.) and decided to go back to an "original" Mustang wheel. The Grant wood wheel does look nice, but I got tired of dealing with all its little issues.

Good luck with yours!

Not a big fan of my wheel, the metal is really rough on the hands when turning fast and gets too hot in the sun. I will definately look for a new wheel in the future. In the meantime though is there a way to make the horn work with a new cap? After looking through the options at mustangsunlimited I am a little confused. Are the caps supposed to have a button on them? What do you actually push to make the horn honk? I have the 2 wires coming out from the wheel, 1 is connected and the other one is free and seems to be missing the piece that connects it and holds it down.

Default 65 horn problem

Thanks again Veronica, I just read all of your horn info and I now understand that i did have a button, it is just worn down. Is there a way to just attach a new horn button somewhere else on the dash? My horn works when I manually touch the wires. Is there a place I can get to the wires under the dash and cut them to wire them to a new button?
I would rather not mess with the steering wheel, after reading all about grant wheels I am already scared its going to pop off, its clicks when i turn it all the way to one side, I dont want to break something I can't fix

Nice job figuring out a short term solution. Personally, it would bug the heck out of me seeing that extra button on my wheel, but that's just me. If you want to keep your Grant, purchasing a rebuild kit would probably solve your horn problem. They're pretty cheap too (less than $20). You would need a steering wheel puller as well for the installation. That's also cheap and not hard to use. The rebuild kit comes with good instructions and you could do this job in less than 2 hours. At least that's how long it took me! Judging from your handywork, you could probably do it much faster. Here's a link to where you can buy the kit. You might even find it a few dollars cheaper elsewhere.

Good luck!
