Default Load-O-Matic Decision

Hey all,

Mine is a 65 hardtop with the 200ci inline six. I'd love to hear from everyone, especially you in-liners. She came with a Holley 1940 bolted on - obviously a replacement - and I'm pretty sure the original Load-O-Matic is still there. Been reading a lot about new dizzys and carbs... My plan was I'd maybe like to step up to a two barrel later on, or at least take the plunge into an electronic ignition system, preferably just a new electronic dizzy.
I realize that the old Load-O-Matic has the SCV valve, so upgrading the carb means upgrading the dizzy. And I want to leave point/condenser stuff behind. So what have you done to upgrade? I've seen new units, like Mallorys, fully electronic dizzys, unfortunately they're $400. How effective is the DSII -> Pertronix ignitor electronic swap? How cost effective is that vs buying a brand new electronic distributor? And what's going to last me the best in the long run?
I'm looking at this car being a not totally daily driver, but definitely hitting the road often when the weather's right.
I assume you can't upgrade the old L-O-M because of the SCV, you have to at least throw a newer dizzy in there, right?

Thanks.

I have the same Holley 1bbl on my 65 convertible. I'm considering replacing it with the new annular discharge 1100 upgrade Pony Carbs is selling, but I'd like to hear more from folks who have made the switch. I switched to Pertronix (and the Flamethrower coil) almost 2 years ago and have no regrets. If you decide to go with the Pertronix, be sure to purchase the original and not the Pertronix II for your 6.

I was thinking about the simple Pertronix electronic conversion. What did you put it in, though? The original stock L-O-M? Or had the distributor been replaced and you put the Pertronix unit in that? One thing I'm trying to figure out is whether or not to ditch the old Load-O-Matic.

The Load O Matic distributor only uses the vacuum advance to advance the timing. There is no provision for centrifical advance. If you are looking for some added performance, I would upgrade to a dist. to where you can dial in the rate of timing advance more accurately.

I have had experience with the original version of the Pertronix points eliminator. It gave me flawless performance. Install it and forget it. You'll never go back to points again.
