how do I run serpentine belt w/ standard pump and no p/s?
I've got a late model 5.0 roller engine.
I put a standard timing cover on the front of it. Because of this, I'll need a standard water pump.
I'd like to run a standard rotation water pump in my late model 5.0 engine (66 mustang)...but only running an alternator, tensioner pulley, crank pulley and water pump pulley, and that's it.
Which serpentine pulley do I need for this, and how do I route the belt?

through some research, it appears march makes a nice serpentine kit with a nice alternator bracket.
I could pick up an aluminum standard water pump through summit and go with the march serepentine pully conversion. It's simple. All it is is a pully on the alternator, the water pump, and the crank, and one serpentine belt wrapped around them simple as pie.
Or, depending on cost, I could retrofit a v belt setup back onto it, and source out some og pullies.
sound about right?

You don't have to do it that way, but I suppose it would work. If you get a clockwise WP, you could put the serpentine belt around the crank/alt/wp like a triangle, no tensioner...just adjust the alt bracket to take the slack out of the belt. I have the same setup you do in a 66. I have a reverse (CCW) WP. I used a tensioner and no matter what I did, couldn't stop the alt from squealing. I couldn't make the belt looser, as the tensioner took up all the slack. I took out the tensioner, got a shorter belt, and now all is fine. The March stuff will work, but I still had to make some adjustments...

Right now, all I have is that very large bracket assembly with the tensioner that the HO 5.0 fox mustangs come with. since I'll be running a standard rotation wp, I'll do away with the tensioner.
the bracket itself however, offers NO adjustment once that tensioner is out, so how do I adjust??
Did you lose that bracket altogether and go with a 60's style alt bracket (the adjsutable one)..if I used the old school bracket setup with my newer alternator (same case I think)...will that position the pulley at the right place (depth)...?? Or is there a way to make that large HO bracket work and make it adjustable?

For what it is worth: i put a new 302 (5.0?) into my 66, i used all the old pully setp up from the old 289 and put a forward rotation pump on, it all works fine and is a cheeper than any other option available this side of the globe.
I've got a March Serpentine system on my car and love it. Easy to install and adjust the belt. I'm sure they make a system for a standard rotation water pump for the 5.0. I've got the counter clockwise system, but if you call them, I know they can fix you up
The set up had a triangle shaped piece that bolted to the driver's side engine head and the tensioner bolted to that. On the passenger side ( I use a early 90's Ford alt), one long bolt attaches the bottom bolt on the alt to the passenger head, and the top bolt on the alt has a rod that attaches to the water pump. This rod has threaded 'eye' bolts on each end, or clevis type joints. March list it on their page: Accesories Water Pumps and A/C You can adjust the length of the rod. If you take out the tensioner, you can put a shorter serpintine belt on your car, and adjust the length of the rod to take slack out of the belt, eliminating the need for the tensioner. I had used a reverse rotation WP, and the tensioner was 'pulling; on my belt vs pushing, and this caused my alt to squeal to no end, like I said, that's why I got rid of the tensioner.

Ford Racing has a reverse rotation water pump that has the same bolt pattern as the original standard rotation pumps. Meaning that the old style timing cover has the same bolt pattern as this pump.
This way you will be able to use a factory serpentine belt arrangement without extensive modifications. The inlet is on the driver's side instead of the passenger side, though. This can be remedied by using a piece of metal tubing and two 90 degree hoses to route the pump to the radiator. A radiator that has the bottom port on the driver's side is also available for your 66. Most resto vendors carry them.
The Ford Racing water pump's part number is M-8501-B50. The FRPP on line catalog can be found at www.fordracingparts.com the price list is also there. This is a heavy duty pump with a cast impeller and heavy duty ball/roller bearings. It should last a long time.
I use a 5.0 block too in my 67. Edelbrock water pump #8848, march water pump pulley #2004 and a march alternator bracket #30025. I rotate the alternator up side down to hide the tensioner.

this is exactly what I want.
appears you've got the standard rotation water pump with a later small case 3g 130 amp alternator, correct> that's the alternator I'll be running.
any idea of what that stuff cost you? your crank pulley looks chrome. Will my stock one work, or is that a march pulley too?

Hello,
i donīt know what crank pulley mine is. Yes it is chromed steel. But heads up this is a performance setup. Lower cooling power @ low rpms but low hp eater
Crank pulley diameter = 4 3/8 inch, water pump pulley diameter = 5 1/2 inch and alternator pulley diameter = 2 3/8 (come with the alternator).
man, that's one slick looking sick engine bay!!!!! Looks so damned good.
I love the bling...but on my budget can't afford it. I've already got an ugly but functional junkyard 130 amp alternator. I think I'll pick up a cheap ass water pump for now, attempt to use my current pullies, and order the polished bracket that you have (I'll eventually start to make it look good too)
Love your bracing, any info on that?

Hello Jeremy,
thank you for the flowers. That was a lot of work
The shock tower brace system is a total control product. Iīve polished this thing by myself and modified it to fit my intake.
