Ford didn't stamp the serial number onto the engine block, that is Chevrolet you are thinking of. On Ford engines, you just go by the casting code, figure out the date from it and see whether or not it corresponds with the build date of your car. Usually the engine will be a few weeks or so older than the car. If it is, then the engine can be considered "correct". That's all the "numbers matching" there is on Ford engines.
