Default 1967 Mustang Coupe 289 Single Exhaust Concerns

I just purchased a 1967 Mustang coupe with the original 289, 110,000 miles on it. The car runs great, love it, but I could use some more power. I want to convert the car from a single exhaust to a dual for 3 reasons: a) Power b) Sound c) I think it just looks better.

I am wondering how difficult it is to even convert a 1967 mustang coupe from single to dual exhaust, with an original 289. What type of headers work best for an increase in power, and what type of exhaust? Is it best to have a 3'', 2.5'', or 2.25''? Would an X, H, or straight type be best? I would like to have the exhaust run straight out the back, I've always liked that look. Is ceramic necessary, and what about heat resistant paint? I know very little about exhaust so I know I'm asking a lot of questions at once. Is this a massive job, or is this something I could accomplish on my own? Can I use one companies headers, and another companies exhaust kits? Do I need a muffler? The engine is original, but if I do decide to replace the engine sooner or later, say to a hi-po 289 or a 302, do I need to replace the whole exhaust system? Any help on ANY of these areas would be immensly appreciated. Any if anyone has any other ideas on how to beef up my very stock looking 67 appearance or performance wise, I am absolutely all ears and open to suggestions.

Default i hope this helps

hello, i recently indtalled a duel exhaust kit on a 67 convertable for a customer, i used the 2.25 inch kit from mustangs unlimited, it fit perfect and sounds great. it does not come with tips but those are available most anywhere, just pick the ones you lik. i used a pair from borla. the kit was only $ 200.00 and the tips wer $ 85.00 for the pair. we kept the hipo manifolds on the car but if you want headers hooker super comp are some good ones. good luck ray

I'm running a 67 with a 289. I have long hooker headers with a dual flowmaster running straight out and tips. Went with flowmaster 40s. Sound and power are awesome. But I had a shop due it because of lack of ability to get it done at my house (time and other work).
From reading up on other forum posts, H = better sound but X = better performance. I'm still in debate about which one I will choose.
