Hi again.

A new turn signal switch certainly won't hurt anything. When you unplug the old turn signal switch, the plug for the emergency flashers will be like 5 inches downstream from that. That's one end of the flasher harness, the other end is at the emergency flasher switch. There will be a blue wire with a white stripe that's coming out of the fuse box that supplies power to the emergency flasher system. I would start at the cigarette lighter, find the wire that's supposed to beplugged into it, and back-track it from there. There will be another wire coming off of that one a little ways back, and that's the other end of the wire that takes power to the flashers. I would find that, check and see if it was hot or not. If it doesn't have power, then your problem is between there and the fuse box. If it does, your problem is downstream. I would then check and see if the flasher pot was getting power. If no, the problem is between the flasher and the point that you checked the power wire. If yes, the problem is further downstream. Then check on the wires coming out of the switch. If power is getting to the switch, but isn't leaving the switch, the problem is the switch itself.
Basically, you start at the power source and check points along the power path until you find the break. Hope that helps.
