Default 1965 Fastback Horn and Hazard Lights not working

Good evening. 1965 Fastback w/289 and C4 Auto trans.

Just bought it yesterday. Horn and hazards do not work. No broken fuses, unless there is another fuse box that I dont know about. The only fuse box I found was the one under the upper left side under the dash.

Where to start. Thanks!

I thought about that too. I unhooked the lead going to one of the horns, then hooked up my multimeter to the lead and to the block. Had the boss (wife) push on the horn and got no voltage to the lead. So, I dont think it is a grounding problem at the horn itself.

Any more thoughts? Thanks!

Well, I tried getting under there as best I could and could not trace the wires from the emergency light switch to the steering column. I still have no room to get under there. Any other recommendations to troubleshoot the hazard lights not working?

I popped off the steering wheel and the two little prongs for the horn contact were worn pretty bad. I ordered a new turn signal switch, so I hope this solves my problem.

Any other recommendations? Thanks!

Hi again. A new turn signal switch certainly won't hurt anything. When you unplug the old turn signal switch, the plug for the emergency flashers will be like 5 inches downstream from that. That's one end of the flasher harness, the other end is at the emergency flasher switch. There will be a blue wire with a white stripe that's coming out of the fuse box that supplies power to the emergency flasher system. I would start at the cigarette lighter, find the wire that's supposed to beplugged into it, and back-track it from there. There will be another wire coming off of that one a little ways back, and that's the other end of the wire that takes power to the flashers. I would find that, check and see if it was hot or not. If it doesn't have power, then your problem is between there and the fuse box. If it does, your problem is downstream. I would then check and see if the flasher pot was getting power. If no, the problem is between the flasher and the point that you checked the power wire. If yes, the problem is further downstream. Then check on the wires coming out of the switch. If power is getting to the switch, but isn't leaving the switch, the problem is the switch itself.
Basically, you start at the power source and check points along the power path until you find the break. Hope that helps.

Is there an easier way to get under the dash and trace the wires? I can hardly even see them because the steering column gets in the way.

Would I have any better access if I removed the speedo cluster?

Thanks again!

Thanks

I've got a 65 convertible with wiring issues. Take out the instrument cluster and you will have all kinds of room and access. Reach up behind the dash and loosen the speedo cable, take the 6 screws out from the cluster, and it slides right out. Be sure to wrap a towel or something around your steering column so you don't scratch it when you remove the cluster.

Good luck

Hi again. I just sort of crawl up under there, but, guys seem to have a little trouble doing that. Here's the instrument cluster removal and, more importantly, re-install.
The Care and Feeding of Ponies: Instrument Cluster Removal
You'll also probably want to remove the glove box liner, or, at least, push it back out of the way. Most of the emergency flasher stuff is over on that side.
