the easyest cheapest way is to have a machine shop boil and clean it and build it ur self a shop will not be less than 2000 for a complete tear down and over haul

I would see if there's a mustang club in your area and go to one of their meetings and ask, recommendations are best. I found a shop 1/2 hour from my house this way and am pleased with them.
Talk to a couple shops and get prices if you can, you should be able to get a fresh rebuild for <$2K depending on what 'needs' to be replaced. They won't know if you will need new pistons until they clean it an mic it to see if it just needs a hone or a fresh bore.
I am putting a stroker kit in mine with new crank, rods, pistons, etc. and the shop is assembling it for $2600. If I had been able to use my stock crank, rods, pistons I bet it would have been <$1800

Preflight,
Are you going to have it balanced while it is in the machine shop?

Add about $200 to balance it. I am not sure what all was in the engine kit but don't forget to add some $$ for the new pistons somewhere.

You're right, I should have it balanced too. The pistons are included in the price of the kit. But I am buying the items seperately because I want to go .020 over. A lot of people seem to automatically go .030 on the cylinders when .010 or .020 over is enough. As these engines get harder and harder to find, the .030 over doesn't leave much for future rebuilds 15, 20 years from now. There seems to be mass hysteria that the extra "cubes" gained by going .030 over makes a gnats ass on the dyno! lol...

Preflight99, what all was in that engine kit for $350? And where did you get it? Were your rods OK to re-use?

Sure, just take a look on the Summit Racing website. Do a copy and paste in the link below. It will take you to rebuild kits for the Ford 289. Engine Rebuild Kits - summitracing.com My rods seem to be in good shape, no sign of spun bearing, etc...
