Thumbs down engine placement in 1965 mustang

my 1965 mustang was a i6 car that was missing when i got the car so i found a nice donor car at the local pick and pull they are the early mounts with the middle bracket anyway i went to dry fit the motor to the car today and i found i have about three and a half inches between the firewall and the engine and that my headers wont fit because i think its sitting to far back am i right or is my headers wrong the whole motor looks to far foward please help

The distance is about right to the firewall if you measured at the center of the engine to the firewall. Sometimes the headers have to be fished in from the bottom side.

Most often you have to lift the engine to get headers in place from the bottom. They rarely go in from the top at all.

Ron Morris makes some adjustable motor mounts if you want to go that route. Check this out:

Ron Morris Performance: RMP Adjustable Motor Mounts

You'll have the ability to shift the motor with those. However, like PaulS said, you'll probably have to take the headers off, position the engine on its mounts, then fish the headers up from the bottom. That's what I had to do - I had to jack the car up way high so I could fish the headers up from the bottom and they had to go almost vertical, then lay them down parallel to the engine to finally bolt them back to the engine.

However, since you said there's no room between the head and the tower and this setup came from a donor, it sounds like you've got the wrong set of headers and they aren't going to fit. Did the headers come from the donor as well, or is this set you have a set you got for this application or a pair you just had laying around?

My vote's on the wrong size headers, based on what you've said so far. Mine did the same thing yours are doing until I switched them out.

1965 coupe - Born - straight six standard issue
Now - 5.0 motor, T5 tranny, R&P, full length subframe connectors, draglink bars, hedman headers
Coming soon - disc brakes, electronic ignition and a whole host of other stuff I forgot to mention. The list goes on and on. Basically, it's my new toy
