Default cam selection advice

so here is what I am thinking,

Comp cam XE262H
Advertised duration: 262/270
Duration at .050 in. cam lift: 218/224
Gross valve lift: .493/.500
Lobe separation: 110

I am running rebuilt, but stock, heads, edelbrock RPM manifold, 650 cfm carb, headers, hot coil and ignition...oh yeah, block is 30 over with flat head pistons.......question.....is that cam a good choice??

I am pretty sure that is the exact cam i got for my 66 289 rebuild. I have a stock bottom end with dished pistons, edelbrock intake, holley 600cfm carb, and cleaned up stock heads. I also have the petronix ingniter with flame thrower coil. I have no idea what power it makes but it runs and sounds really good. I think it is a good choice for a cam.

I have that cam also in my 289>331 stroker but haven't installed it yet, it was as high as I wanted to go for a 90% DD car. I listened to a XE268 in another 289 and it was too lopey for me and the vacuum was lower than I wanted for PB and A/C.
Download the free CamQuest program from CompCams website and plug in different variables, it'll suggest different cams depending on your compression, rear gears, etc. I discussed 3 cams suggested by my builder and this was one of them, we both agreed it suited my use best.
I had mine nitrided (extra $100) but worth it for the extra protection, suggested by the builder. I'm also using the CC ZDDP additive ($10) at every oil change for the extra protection.

The main thing is to be honest with yourself and not overcam the engine thinking you'd like a lumpy racer if you're really cruising and car shows most of the time.

What are your expectations? Is vaccum an issue? Where do you want your operating power band to be? Have you checked to see spring pressure?

My expectations are nothing more than just a little out of the hole power.......see my read end gears are 3:52.......not a vacuum issue and the power band would be ideal at 2000-5000 rpm. I did use the "camquest" chart and this was one of about 5 that it suggested

Default cam

With stock heads if you over cam you can hurt yourself more than help. I went with the 280h but i have adelbrock heads to make it breathe better and a stall to 2400. Really have to decide what your main purpose is and match everything together. Intake, cam, etc. all need to be making power at the same time or you will be shooting yourself in the foot for the money you spend and not run any better.

The 280 comp cam is a little agressive for my set up. I think the 262 comp cam, it should be fine unless I am missing something

That should be a good one for ur set up. Anything more radical ull need higher gears in ur rear end and a stall converter if auto trans

I'd advise converting to a roller...go with the modern technology...if you stay "traditional", you better have your heads prepped with screw in studs and guide plates, otherwise you can easily drop a valve with a high lift cam...bye bye new engine.

The cam you have, won't have any clearance issues which is the main issue when choosing a cam, Mike. SCT Tuner.

If you think, .500 is a high lift cam you have to be running near stock. That's close to the lift or is, the same as the E303. And that's a mild cam, Mike. SCT Tuner.

when I called comp cam, they said that cam would be fine with my set-up.....even with the stock heads. I could be wrong, but the cam I am looking at doesn't seem to aggresive to have to do all that work to the heads
