Default 67 Mustang Overheats while driving NOT at idle???

Here is a strange one, I was all ready to trouble shoot my cooling system as it gets quite hot while driving, especially in stop and go traffic. So I had the cap off to check coolant flow and meat thermo to check temp. Coolant started moving at 160 and moved faster as temp approached 190. After 25 mins temp would not budge above normal 190. I do not believe I am running lean as plugs look rich if anything last time I checked. Does that leave me with the distributor advancing too quickly, i.e. weak springs? 302, w/ 4bbl, mild cam (448/470), bored .030 over. Am I missing something? How do I check total advance? Thanks!

Warm up the car and then rev the engine while you can see both radiator hoses. If one colllapses while you are reving the engine, put a support spring in the hose and see if that helps.

i had a 67,289, heavily built, i had a guy take the top of the rad off, remove the top plate inside and that solved my problem. i also by- passed the heater core in the summer.

No fan clutch, it does have a shroud and multiblade flex fan.

How do you bypass the heater core and how does that help keep it cool? I would think that would eliminate the failsafe of turning the heater on if you are overheating in traffic.

I would pressure test the system and take it from there. you may need a radiator.
