Unhappy Ignition problem?

I have a 68 Mustang that quit on me today. We've replaced the starter, solenoid and the battery cables. We've checked the voltage and everything seems alright. When I turn the key over there is a clicking sound. Could this be something with the ignition switch or are we missing something? Please help!

Hello. That sounds like a dead battery. It could be that the battery is no longer able to hold a charge, or, it could be that the charging system is not doing it's job. If you were driving the car and it died on you, and, it turns out that the battery is dead, that sounds like a charging system problem. The alternator is what supplies power to the car when the motor's running, not the battery. If the motor is running off of the battery until the battery dies, that's a charging system problem. But, to answer your question, no, that doesn't sound like an ignition switch problem.

Load test the battery, if the needle drops quick replace the battery. Don't just replace it, check it first and make sure that's your problem. If you have a local AUTOZONE, they'll test it for free. Don't waiste your money, until you know what your problem is, Mike. SCT Tuner.

Hi again. Like ITLRUN said, you definitely want to figure out what the problem is before you start throwing money at parts. Just running out and buying stuff in the hopes of it fixing the problem is a very expensive way to fix something. And, thank you, 02mingrayv6. That is very sweet of you. As a side note, you might want to replace your positive battery cable on that 02. It has to be rotten by now. Those things were waay too light of a gauge wire from the factory, and started corroding almost instantly.

One thing people have to be careful about doing is continuing to try and start the engine with the relay just clicking.

The reason?

Because the relay contact points may weld themselves together...... so when you get a new or fully charged battery hooked up the starter will begin cranking and continue cranking.

Hi again. Glad that you got it running Now all that remains is to figure out why the battery was dead. You wouldn't want to be right back in the same boat in the very near future.

You're so right. We had the battery tested and it's still good, so I'm kinda at a loss as to why it drained like it did.

Hi again. My first guess would be the charging system isn't all that it should be. Either the alternator isn't charging, the alternator ground is no good, something like that.
