Default 1966 2+2 wobbles in the steering

Hi folks,

Thanks for any assistance in advance with the latest problem.

I just finished putting new upper control arms in the car along with a shelby drop. Other than the power steering everything in the steering department is new.

I am getting a wobble (i think in the steering) between 45 and 60 MPH , the wobble was there before i changed the UCAs but i thought changing these out would help as all the "slop" would be gone, it hasn't got any better realy, in fact it feels a little worse now.

I am going to get the wheels ballanced but am missing something here? Tyres are new also.

Could the drive shaft do this, i have had it in and out a lot, i understand it can be 180deg out ....

Off to drag racing today in the car but i will not be sending her down the track this time ....

it could be that your drive shaft isnt fitting or else it could be that its just loose

your wheel bearings could be bad or not tightened enough also double check your bolts and torq on everything i'd hate to read the paper and see you got mangled but if you have changed your suspension components and the problem is there you probably have a wheel bearing going out, the drive shavt would be a vibration more than anything a wobble is something totally different

Yep,

I am thinking more like steering than drive shaft.

The wheel bearings are also new and i have double checked these.

I will get the front wheels ballanced and report back this week.

Could be the U joints i guess but these look good and i am getting no movement in the shaft when i wiggle it around.

I replaced the front shocks but not the rears, when i push on the trunk of the car the shocks seem to work fine, could it still be an issue with these ?

Rotate the tires and see if there is a change.

Hi axman61,

i have smaller ones on the front than the back so i could go side to side i guess ....

Tonight i lifted the back up on axel stands and took it out to 45-60mph, there is still a cycling vibration that i havn't tracked down as yet but not the wobble, i am thinking the front of the car is the place to keep looking ...

Got the wheels balanced, these were out a long way according to the man at the balance shop.

As crittermustany suggested I took another look at the wheel bearings, these needed a little nipping up so this was done also.

I can’t take it out for a spin for a few days now as the rain is tipping down but as soon as I can I will.

One more question; there seems to be a fair bit of movement in the power steering unit, my understanding is that it is supposed to have this movement for it to operate properly, would excessive movement here contribute to any “wobble”.

Thanks in advance for your comments.
