Default 1967 Mustang 4 speed question

I am thinking about putting a 4 speed toploader in my 1967 Mustang Coupe I presently have a 3 speed toploader. My question is what would be the best shifter and what parts do I need to install it.

Thanks

do you have the 4 speed already? the reason I ask is if you are going to go to all the trouble of swapping transmissions why not go with a 5 speed and gain the benefit of overdrive.

No I don't have the 4 speed yet. What is involved in installing a 5 speed.

since you have a manual transmission already, you will need the transmission, a new transmount, bellhousing adapter plate, shorter drive shaft yoke. a diaphragm style clutch and pressure plate. you might need a new bellhousing, I am not sure, as I do not know if the bolt pattern is the same for the 3 speed as it is for the 4 speed.

on the positive side there are tons of these transmissions available now and you will likely be able to find one easier than a 4 speed.

A 4 speed toploader or borg warner t-10 will go into a car that has a 3 speed toploader without chaning anything except the shifter and linkage. If money and original look are not issues a 5 speed would be the better choice but you should be able to find a used 4 speed that bolts right up for around $400. I have a Hurst competition plus shifter and hurst linkage for my 4spd. It fit perfect and works great. The hurst shifter was $250 and the linkage kit was $100. You should be able to change to a 4 spd for less than $800 and do it yourself where as putting a 5 speed in is a lot harder, more expensive, and takes more time.

That is true. but when you are done you have the same final drive ratio as you have with the 3 speed. there is no doubt the toploader is a good transmission and tough as nails, also no doubt it is an easier swap, but a t-5 gains overdrive, a quieter smoother shifting transmission and it weighs about 25 lbs less, and it is not difficult to swap. also they are getting much less expensive to buy used, because there are so many out there. it will be more expensive than just swapping to a 4 speed no question, but it is worth the extra cost in my opinion.

here is a pretty nice article on the swap.

btw here is a 94 5 speed for 399 plus the 389 cost for the conversion kit and you will need to change the input shaft for another about 100 so for less than 1000.00 you could have a 5 speed.

You do end up with the same final drive of 1:1 but thats not bad unless you do a lot of highway driving or have some really low gears. I didn't realize you could do a 5 speed swap that cheap. I have to agree with mccance that if you can put a 5 speed in for $1000 that would be better and the way to go.
