Default 1968 C-4 Transmission, finding parts and info?

I have a 1968 coupe with a 289 C-4, its a Hi-Po. I am in the process of restoring it and i am working on the transmission. I took it to a local shop who has stripped it and told me several things need replacing, bands, clutches, valve body. I have found several kits on summit and stuff for those, and i have found a valve body. The question i have is that on the valve body it says there is a forward pattern of a reverse pattern. How do i find out which one i need? and my other question is does anyone have any suggestions on kits to use or things to look out for. I have noticed that lots of parts say 1970 and up on the C-4 that their made for and wondered whats the change that was made was. If anybody can help me with any of these questions it would be much appreciated.

Thanks, Ian

PS. I have a friend whos willing to rebuild it, I am buying the replacement parts though.
