Default Need help with this carburetor

I just picked up this 66 289 Mustang and found out that there seems to be a few problems with the carburetor. First of, the car runs but I have to crank it a few times.

Problem 1. I don't know what model carburetor it is. I can tell its a Holly, but other than that I'm lost.

Problem 2. It's leaking fuel from the front bottom. If you are looking at it from the drivers side, its on the bottom left. It should be the last picture.

Problem 3. It looks like the butterfly valve at the top (not sure if that's what you call it) is stuck. I tried to move it but nothing happens.

Is it worth it to rebuild the carburetor or should I get a new one? I'd like to rebuild if possible to save money. Any links to a rebuild kit would be helpful.

Thanks ahead of time.

I looked on the air horn and saw this number

LIST-1850-3 0757

It look just like this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Holle...QQcmdZViewItem

So I guess its a Holley 1850-3 model.

I found this site. Is the first kit (5415b)correct for this model?

i am not exactly sure what model it is (i know it isnt a 4150 or 4500) you will have to show the pics to someone who knows more about that model. jegs and summit sell complete rebuild kits for around 100.00. the leak looks like it is coming from the accelerator pump. if you want to keep it just soak it in parts cleaner for a day or so and buy the rebuild kit.a new carb will probably cost 250-300.sorry i couldnt help more

it is a 600 cfm. it is a manual choke. it is leaking from accelerator pump. with that list # 1850-3 you should be able to get a kit at local parts store for 40.00 or less. the choke is cable operated, pull cable to close, push to open. holleys are not that complicated.

Thanks for the info. I went to autzone and looked up the rebuild kit. They list a Holley 4160 600 CFM for R9 or except R9. Is this the right kit?

Thanks for the info. I found a link that confirmed the family type.

I called Napa this morning and they have the kit in stock so I'm going to pick it up today.

OK, I just picked up the kit. It looks like at has around 40 or 50 pieces. Is this going to be a hard thing to do? I'm sorting feeling like its to much. I consider my mechanical abilities to be about OK. I have changed alternators, starters, shocks and and a clutch before but never something like this.

I've looked at a few sites with rebuild instructions. It does not look like they use all of the parts. Should I expect some left over parts once I"m done?

You probably will have left over parts. If you are unsure, just take lots of pictures as you take it apart to help you put it back together.

You will have parts left over when you are done, the key to rebuilding a carb is clean clean clean when you think it's clean enough clean it again. Also spend time and make sure your float levels are set correct, the instructions will cover this. Take your time, follow the instructions rebuilt the carb, start your stang up sit back and enjoy a job well done! They look a lot scarier than they really are!
