Default Carburetor - To rebuild or not to rebuild

I have another post about a carb rebuild but I felt this was different enough to start a new thread.

I have a Holley 4160 600 LIST 1850-3. I purchased the rebuild kit ($41) yesterday and proceeded to take it apart and clean it last night.
Well, upon closer inspection it looks like the carburetor has experienced some abuse. For example, the "choke lever assembly" rusted and fell apart on me while I was removing it. I found the part for $15 online.

Also, there is a screw screwed into what I believe is part of the throttle that will allow the lower rear valves to open sooner. Maybe a rigged job to get more power? The screw is does not look stock.

My question is, should I just find a rebuilt one off fleabay and save the rebuild kit and old carb for parts or should I get the new parts and take the chance? I looked around and it looks like I can get a rebuild carb for about $100 to $150.

Also, will a 1850-4 with electronic work on my car (1966 with 289)? I've seen them around for a little more but it would be nice to not have to worry about the manual choke.

Thanks ahead of time.

sounds like yours is pretty bad off. the screw in the secondary linkage is a NO NO, does not work. probably get one off ebay, just check feedback. oh yea, get the electric choke. much better!

So I attempted to rebuild the carburetor. I was able to fix the leak coming out of the accelerator pump but now it look out of the back vertical tube after about a minute of idling. On this Holley 4160 there are two vertical tubes on the horn. This is the rear tube. I'm not sure what is causing this.

Anyone have this problem?

What would you guys recommend for a new Carburetor? I'm not looking for anything awesome or expensive. Just good enough for me to cruise around town in on the Weekends.

How about one of Summit's new carbs. The 600 CFM vacuum secondary with electric choke is on sale until the end of this month for $225, brand new. Regular price is $250. It's a clone of the desirable Autolite 4100. Holley parts fit it and it has full adjustability. I just bought one myself, it's polished aluminum and a really good buy. It even has clear float bowl windows like the Barry Grant carbs, so that you can set the float level with the engine running and no fuel spillage.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll be looking to get a new one soon. I have so many questions and this looks like a good place to ask.

If you want to run the carb you have for the time being check the rear float it is either too high or possibly stuck. Sometimes a gentle tap on float bowl will free it up.

The needle and seat was not adjusted correctly. I will have to get a new carb anyways as I think this one was abused.

Is getting a used carb off ebay OK? Or would you guys recommend always going new.

I would go new unless you know the person and their equipment, summit racing has some good deals going right now, for your purposes stay away from used

That's exactly the carb that I bought. You will have an excellent carb and the price can't be beat. I doubt that you'll find a decent rebuilt carb for that price. As I said before, it is basically the same design as the Autolite 4100 that people are paying a fortune for in rebuilt form. Like the 4100, many Holley parts fit this carb., so finding replacement parts isn't going to be a problem.
