Default Help! Trying to hook up Backup Lights for a '73 Mach 1

Hi guys - running into a little trouble trying to get my '73 inspected. When the transmission was replaced by the previous owner, the backup switch wasn't put on the new one. What I did was hot wire into a 15amp fuse and connect a toggle switch to the dash. Toggle switch has a light indicator, so I know it has power.

I ran a wire back and tried to splice into the black/purple wire for the reverse lights. Nothing. Doesn't work. There is a bundle of 5 wires that run to the back of the car - this is where I spliced in.

Any ideas? Anxious to get her on the road, but can't pass inspection without the reverse lights!

Thanks,
Ken

You could try getting a new reverse switch. They shouldn't be too much. Plus, you know that it will work the way its supposed to.

I would try putting it back the way it should be with the reverse switch. I had a problem where a rat made a nest in the car before I bought it and ate the wires going to the back. If you just are trying to pass inspection, run your wire from your toggle all the way back to the reverse lights and then make sure the reverse lights have a good ground.

I do believe the backup switch is a ground-interrupt. You may be pushing 12v into a wire that already has 12v. Look to see where it grounds.

Plus, if you have a toploader you can make a bracket to hold a momentary switch for your reverse lights. Real easy stuff and there is a hole on the shifter assembly for it to mount to.
