Default 69 428 CJ Rearend and exhaust system

I have a 3.55 rear end and I'm thinking about going lower for the 1/4 mile track or street light to street light. What would be the best one to use without blowing up my engine. I heard all sorts of horror stories about going over on the RPM's of this motor. I have a Nodular rearend and 31 spline axle. Also I want to take of my emmisions and original exhaust and install headers and 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 inch pipes with delta flow 40's. Whould this work without losing HP?

that depends on what you will use the car for mostly.
the 3.55's should give you a good all around gear. adding the headers and free flowing exh will help a bunch.

adding a taller gear will result in traction problems, you will have to keep that in mind if you go that route.
along with losing any type of freeway speed.
if you go over a 4.11 then adding a rev limiter will keep the motor parts where they belong.

Thanks 70MAC1. The rearend works pretty good. I have a C-6 and currently It revs high at 60 mph. 3000rpms. I dont drive the car that much on the freeway just about max 50 miles one direction for car shows. If I dont do any better at them the car will be modified. Im looking for a police intake right now that should save about 50 pounds and the headers and exhaust with a MSD ignition should HOPEFULLY do wonders. Thanks Monte

I would suggest going with bigger pipes than that. Maybe not going all the way to 3", but some like 2 1/2's or 2 3/4's I would think would give you better flow and definitely compliment the tone of the 428's sound.

I wouldnt think three inch would be all that bad...that 428 makes a lot of exhaust, on an engine that big it wouldnt really be an over kill issue. My friend has 3.90 on his 69 428 SCJ and while he likes the acceleration (it is scary) he hates the high RPM on the highway. He is going to put in 3.55's. Good luck.
