Default 1964 Resto Mod Coupe

First I would like to introduce myself. My name is Drew Smith. Im 19 years old and im from Tupelo, MS. I have had a 64 1/2 coupe since i was ten years old. My dads original plan was to restore the car to all an all original car. Well now im 19 and the car made it to a complete tear down of the car and it had all the body work done besides the paint ( it is primered right now). So here is the new plan. Im wanting to do the car as a resto mod and do some things that my wild mind has thought up. Some include an IRS from an 03' or 04' cobra and the drivetrain. I also want to tub the rear so i can put a wide set of wheels in the rear ( possibly talkin 12 inches wide). So my question for all early model mustang owners is how hard would it be to make this possible. And if it is going to be alot of extra work i will scratch tubbing the rear end but i want to stick with the IRS and drivetrain idea. Thanks for all opinions and help.

You can use the 99-04 cobra irs DVS Restorations, Inc. - IRS for Vintage Mustangs sells everything you need to bolt it in the car.Or i would look at MUSTANG IRS - Independent Rear Suspensions For New & Classic Ford Mustangs Putting a mod motor in that car will be a huge job you'll have to use a mustang 2 kit cut out the shock towers and depending which tranny probably have to cut and change your tranny hump in the floor pan.Plus the wiring and fuel system its a huge job.Or build a nasty 302 stroker and t5 tranny both bolt right in and would be cheaper.

Since you're asking whats involved in the modular conversion I'm guessing you haven't looked into it that deeply. If you're really wanting to use the cobra drive train scratching the wheel tubs isn't going to make it any less work as that would be a walk in the park by comparison. If you cant weld, don't have any fabrication experience, or don't have the tools, I wouldn't recommend using the cobra drive train. I used the suspension and drive train from a mark viii on my 68 which is similar to what you're considering and its a lot of work, but I've enjoyed it.

Default keep it simple

Personally, I say just keep it the way it is, drive it, enjoy it, and you'll save alot of money, frustration, and avoid destroying a classic. Maybe do some simple mods but nothing major.
