Default 1965 steering wheel problem

I replaced the blinker wires in my car and when I took off the steering wheel everything just kinda popped off. I put it all back together but the wheel is really tight. Now I am trying to get it off again and a piece is stuck

http://mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=3294+01# the piece that is stuck is actually the first piece in this picture on the left, the one with the horn wires coming out of it
On the end thats down facing down metal piece seems to separating and breaking off.

Hey courtneyfolly,

Just had a problem with mine also and this is what I did:

DISCONNECT BATTERY!

Mount the steering wheel to the piece that is stuck (it has splines that key onto the shaft).

Important part: put the large center nut on the shaft about 1 turn.

Pop the back side of the steering wheel towards you with both hands until it pops loose. The large nut (the important part!) will keep the steering wheel from hitting you in the forehead when it finally breaks loose.
When you put it back together, use some anti seize compound on the splines so it will come off easy next time. The nut is what keeps everything in place

Here is the article I referenced when I changed out the turn signal cam and wiring. It should help you out.
