Default install of ignition key

i broke my old key off in my 66 and pulled the core out of the dash. .. however for the new one im supposed to insert the core in the acces position... put the little key in the whole (no the ignition key the tiny pin hole under it) and turn it counter clockwise... i have been able to get the dang thing to go in right.. .i counterclockwise turn it but no luck so far... anyone have any other methods... i got this out of a mustang repair manual but its just not been working i need tips and hints etc

Disconnect battery cable. Install key in lock cylinder, Insert key and lock cylinder into switch body upright, turn to ACC then to ON. Turn further to START, key should back off to ON when released from START (spring back to ON). Nothing has to be inserted into the pin hole when installing the tumbler, only when removing it. If it locks in but does not spring back from START, a little filing of the tail end of the lock cylinder is required to get it to work smoothly.
