Default battery is going dead

i have a 66 mustang and the battery keeps dieing on me. it will start fine if i crank it every couple of days, but if i wait a week or 2 i will have to recharge the battery. i have put a new battery on replaced the wiring harness from the alternator to the voltage regulator, because it had bare wires and i thought that was the problem, but it is still doing it. I have looked for other shorts in the wiring and cannot find any or i am overlooking them. is there a better way to check for shorts than just looking for them. Any suggestion will be very helpful it is driving me nuts

The way I have done for years, but I'm old school anyway. First off disconnect your ground cable, now take a test light place the clip on the cable itself, now take the light and touch the negative post. If the light, lights up then you know you have a short somewhere. Now the process of elimination, start by removing one fuse at a time and repeating the procedure above until you find the fuse that puts the light out. Now find out what runs off that fuse, at least now you have it narrowed down and should be easy to find, Mike. SCT Tuner.

How a bout when driving the car .. volts are usually about 13-14, usually closer to 14 if your lights arn't on.

Alternator belt loose ? skipping, squeeling noises ?

Default Added Radio?

I know I had a problem after I installed a new CD changer in the car, it got hooked up and constantly drains the battery power because the clock is always running.

On your CD changer only the memory and clock should be on when the key is off. If you connected the CD changer directly to the battery (or a wire that was "hot" all the time that may be your problem)

Try removing the BAT wire from the alternator and connecting a test light from the wire to the alternator. If it lights you have a shorted diode in the alternator and it will drain your battery and not charge PROPERLY.

Since you replaced the battery you should have no problems with sulphation in it but you can find out for sure by charging the battery and then remove the cables and let it sit for a few days. If it dies without the cables attached then it is in the battery, either sulphation or an internal short, and it should be replaced.
The box that new parts come in says "NEW" not always "GOOD".
