Default starter issues on 1967 Mustang coupe

replaced starter on '67 mustang v8 302 4bl, than new starter is smoking. i hooked it up exactly like i took the old one off.

removed headers, unscrewed the starter, removed the starter, replaced the starter, screwed it in, screwed the headers back in. viola!

Did I mess up somewhere? any idea why my starter is smoking? or could it possibly be my headers, it only starts smoking after running for about a minute.

there are no clearance issues with anything, the wires are not touching anything, and neither is the starter.

Dead battery... might have been a bad ground or your starter was a bad one to begin with. Can you take it back to where you got it and have them hook it up to test it?

new battery, new starter, new solenoid, new ground cables, new starter to solenoid cable. Starts now, but after a minute or two of running a "burning" smell builds up, then a loud POP came from the starter/transmission area.

I would say greasy hands on the headers burning off the oils? But now that it is not starting, bad starter or relay.

Something else is amiss here.

not a lot involved in this circuit.

assuming you're not installing the batt backwards, and that your cables are hooked up right, you could have gotten a bad starter

Hello,
Very interesting and odd problem.
Why did you replace the original starter...perhaps that may help figure out what is going on.

I was thinking the starter bendix is getting stuck in the out or connected position.
This could be caused by misalignment or something wrong with the key.

When/if you pull the starter again, check the teeth on the entire flywheel

Is the starter you put in for the correct year etc. Perhaps it needs a shim but I am net certain how to figure that.

Just an idea........from an OLD back-yard mechanic. Print Dad

the reason i replaced the original starter is: the housing was cracked and it was essentially just dangling there.

i checked with autozone, and according to them and the casting numbers it was the correct one for a 68 302 which is what's in my 67 coupe
